South University

As of 2005, South University is one of four private, post-secondary educational institutions managed by Education Management Corporation. With over 110 years of academic history, South offers degrees at the associate, bachelor, master and doctorate levels in areas including business, nursing, pharmacy and creative art and design. The school has 13 locations in the United States and also offers online programs.

Approach:

South desired to expand its health sciences program and engaged the Education Practice Group to drive the process. Our team created an extensive analysis and market segmentation to understand the demand for health sciences pedagogy in specific geographic regions across the United States. As a result of this study, we determined a real estate strategy was necessary to align prospective students with the applicable health sciences programs of South.

Results:

C&W worked with South to implement the program expansion across multiple markets in the U.S. As a result, South entered nine new markets over a five year period in both existing office buildings or new built-to-suit developments ranging from 40,000 to 55,000 RSF. The southeast, southwest and midwest were the predominant markets for growth opportunities for the school, as our extensive analysis showed a demand for health science programs existed in these locations.
